Al Zahra Medical center offers DEXA Scan (Dual X-ray Absorptiometry) to measure Bone Mineral density (BMD).
DEXA scans are used to diagnose or assess someone's risk of Osteoporosis, the silent and dangerous disease in elderly people. DEXA scan is more effective than normal X-rays in identifying low bone mineral density.
The scan generally takes 10 to 20 minutes. It’s a machine that produces two X-ray beams. One is high energy and the other is low energy. The machine measures the amount of X-rays that pass through the bone from each beam. This will vary depending on how thick the bone is. Based on the difference between the two beams, the doctor can measure your bone density.
DEXA scans use a much lower level of radiation than standard X-ray examinations. DEXA scans and X-rays aren't recommended for pregnant women, as X-rays can damage an unborn child.
